About Ma Jun Jie

Xi’an, China

Ma Junjie is a ceramic artist based in Xi’an, China. He graduated in 2014 with a degree in Ceramic Art from the Art College of Xi’an University of Arts and Science. In 2016, he founded Wen Shan Studio, and later co-founded the collective brand Shan Jiuli in 2018.

Ma’s practice focuses on everyday functional ware, particularly tableware and tea utensils. Working primarily with locally sourced clay from the Yaozhou kiln region in Shaanxi, his works reflect the mineral-rich texture and subtle grit characteristic of northern Chinese ceramics. He employs a range of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, alongside self-mixed clay bodies and glazes.

Through restrained forms and quiet surfaces, Ma seeks a balance between practicality and calm beauty, creating objects that are intended to be used daily and integrated naturally into contemporary life.
